HOW YOUR LIKE

CARD SWIPES

There has been a paradigm shift in how seller sees a buyer now.
The process is far from street hawking and chance based. Like a
predator, we are being stalked, in questionable way in-fact. The
Facebook data breach fiasco being a key example of how we are
being stalked. But is it that bad?
Let us take a look into how this process would ideally work.
Your friend Sally went on a ski trip to the Alps. She checked in to
XYZ Ski resort and YOU LIKED that FB check in. At this stage,
probably you are just happy for Sally, for a brief moment you might
as well think “I wish I was there!!” and then you check you bank
account, then realise “NOPE!”. But then you start to save for this
certain trip.

In the background what would happen – your banker now know you
are spending less than usual this means there is a tendency to
save. This data will encourage coupon and discounting websites to
advertise because you are more likely to go for offers and coupons.
Then as and when your search on the internet that about skiing, the
hotel that you liked where Sally checked in, sends you and email –
the message boils down to -

“you have been saving and you probably have 500 quids with ya,
great job – now we will give you our 700 quids room at 550 just for
you!!”

They cash extra 50 from you to pay the digital marketer that
monitored your saving patterns and then calculated the right time to
send you this mail. YOU MADE A PURCHASE.
This above example is way simplified and is mostly wrong at
fundamental level – but this is what the essence of digitisation of
world means roughly. Experts are should totally write down some
comments and let the world (and me) know where I am wrong!
The decisions that we make that are life changing such as having
a child or buying a house are also driven by such factors. Being
more informed is the best thing you can do as there is much more
to gain.

So should you become a Data Scientist now? No, that is a
profession best left to maths nerds. What should you do now that
you have read this blog post? Call on help from your friend Google
and search as much as you want. Most importantly, disconnect.
The internet will only show you what you want to see. Novelty
remains innately Human.

Taking a course in statistics and probabilities will be a good option
to know the basic framework, ask your program director for more
details as making a career in Data science doesn’t necessarily
mean having an undergrad in Maths or computing.
So…
